Suggested Briefing Points
Pre-Outdoor Time Briefing (keep it short)
o Recap some things from last lesson
o What we are going to do: explain the activities, where they will be going
o What to bring downstairs if needed: (e.g. pencil and paper/handout)
o Ground rules
o Listen to the teacher/trainer obey
o Practice self control
o Work as a team
· CARE: Care for your buddy or team member. Do not push or pull each other; care for school or park: Let us not leave rubbish behind!
· RESPECT: Respect living things: plants and animals. Do not scare, damage or hurt them.
· CONSIDERATION: Take turns, give way, make way to let others past (corridor, pathway in a park)
Pupils should have:
· Sharp Eyes (to spot animals, especially when they are camouflaged)
· Sharp ears (to hear nature sounds like bird calls)
· Whispering voices (not disturbing classes in the school, not scaring animals)

Safety Briefing
1. WEATHER: no activities if there is lightning warning
2. FALLING INTO PONDS: do not play or push each other when near a pond. Stay at least 1m away from water’s edge and best to squat down to observe
3. POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ANIMALS (see next box)
4. PLANT SAP OR PARTS: we do not pluck or damage plant parts – out of respect for nature. The sap can make people who have allergies get itchy skin)
| Dangerous Things in the outdoors
· If you see Bees, wasps, centipede, snakes, etc; give a shout so everyone knows
· move away.
· Once you are at a safe distance, you can observe the animals.
Attitude against potentially dangerous animals
· These animals that can sting or bite, do this so to hunt for animals to eat.
· However if you threaten them, they can bite in defense. Do not provoke or touch or kill them. This is having no respect for life/nature
· They are in their proper home, so we need to give them respect.
· Many people think animals are all out to harm humans. They become so fearful for no reason. Find out the facts. Control your screaming. It is not a matter of life and death.
· What are the really dangerous things outdoors? Lightning, ponds, traffic on the road and maybe snakes (if you step on them)
