6 Simple Ways to Lose Belly Fat, Based on Science

6 Simple Ways to Lose Belly Fat, Based on Science

6 Simple Ways to Lose Belly Fat, Based on Science

Belly fat is not just a problem because it can look bad.

In fact, having lots of fat in the abdominal area is strongly linked to diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease (1Trusted Source).

For this reason, losing belly fat has massive benefits for your health and can help you live longer.

Belly fat is usually estimated by measuring the circumference around your waist. This can easily be done at home with a simple tape measure.

Anything above 40 inches (102 cm) in men and 35 inches (88 cm) in women is known as abdominal obesity.

If you have a lot of excess fat around your waistline, then you should take some steps to get rid of it even if you're not very heavy overall.

Fortunately, there are a few proven strategies that have been shown to target the fat in the belly area more than other areas of the body.

Here are 6 evidence-based ways to lose belly fat.

Ways to Lose Belly FatShare on Pinterest

Added sugar is very unhealthy.

Studies show that it has uniquely harmful effects on metabolic health (2Trusted Source).

Sugar is half glucose, half fructose, and fructose can only be metabolized by the liver in significant amounts (3Trusted Source).

When you eat a lot of added sugar, the liver gets overloaded with fructose and is forced to turn it into fat (4).

Numerous studies have shown that excess sugar, mostly due to the large amounts of fructose, can lead to increased accumulation of fat in the belly and liver (5).

Some believe that this is the primary mechanism behind sugar's harmful effects on health. It increases belly fat and liver fat, which leads to insulin resistance and a host of metabolic problems (6Trusted Source).

Liquid sugar is even worse in this regard. Liquid calories don't get "registered" by the brain in the same way as solid calories, so when you drink sugar-sweetened beverages, you end up eating more total calories (7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source).

Studies show that sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to a 60% increased risk of obesity in children, for each daily serving (9).

Make a decision to minimize the amount of sugar in your diet, and consider completely eliminating sugary drinks.

This includes sugar-sweetened beverages, sugary sodas, fruit juices and various high-sugar sports drinks.

Keep in mind that none of this applies to whole fruit, which are extremely healthy and have plenty of fiber that mitigates the negative effects of fructose.

The amount of fructose you get from fruit is negligible compared to what you get from a diet high in refined sugar.

If you want to cut back on refined sugar, then you must start reading labels. Even foods marketed as health foods can contain huge amounts of sugar.

Summary Excess sugar consumption may be the primary driver of excess fat in the belly and liver. This is particularly true of sugary beverages like soft drinks.

Protein is the most important macronutrient when it comes to losing weight.

It has been shown to reduce cravings by 60%, boost metabolism by 80–100 calories per day and help you eat up to 441 fewer calories per day (10Trusted Source, 11Trusted Source, 12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source).

If weight loss is your goal, then adding protein is perhaps the single most effective change you can make to your diet.

Not only will it help you lose, it also helps you avoid re-gaining weight if you ever decide to abandon your weight loss efforts (14Trusted Source).

There is also some evidence that protein is particularly effective against belly fat.

One study showed that the amount and quality of protein consumed was inversely related to fat in the belly. That is, people who ate more and better protein had much less belly fat (15).

Another study showed that protein was linked to significantly reduced risk of belly fat gain over a period of 5 years (16Trusted Source).

This study also showed that refined carbs and oils were linked to increased amounts of belly fat, but fruits and vegetables linked to reduced amounts.

Many of the studies showing protein to be effective had protein at 25–30% of calories. That's what you should aim for.

So make an effort to increase your intake of high-protein foods such as whole eggs, fish, seafood, legumes, nuts, meat and dairy products. These are the best protein sources in the diet.

If you struggle with getting enough protein in your diet, then a quality protein supplement (like whey protein) is a healthy and convenient way to boost your total intake.

If you're a vegetarian or vegan, then check out this article on how to increase your protein intake.

You can find plenty of protein powder options on Amazon.

Bonus tip: Consider cooking your foods in coconut oil. Some studies have shown that 30 mL (about 2 tablespoons) of coconut oil per day reduces belly fat slightly (17, 18Trusted Source).

Summary Eating plenty of protein can boost your metabolism and reduce hunger levels, making it a very effective way to lose weight. Several studies suggest that protein is particularly effective against belly fat accumulation.

Carb restriction is a very effective way to lose fat.

This is supported by numerous studies. When people cut carbs, their appetite goes down and they lose weight (19Trusted Source).

Over 20 randomized controlled trials have now shown that low-carb diets lead to 2–3 times more weight loss than low-fat diets (20, 21, 22).

This is true even when the low-carb groups are allowed to eat as much as they want, while the low-fat groups are calorie restricted and hungry.

Low-carb diets also lead to quick reductions in water weight, which gives people near instant results. A difference on the scale is often seen within 1–2 days.

There are also studies comparing low-carb and low-fat diets, showing that low-carb diets specifically target the fat in the belly, and around the organs and liver (23Trusted Source, 24Trusted Source).

What this means is that a particularly high proportion of the fat lost on a low-carb diet is the dangerous and disease promoting abdominal fat.

Just avoiding the refined carbs (sugar, candy, white bread, etc) should be sufficient, especially if you keep your protein intake high.

However, if you need to lose weight fast, then consider dropping your carbs down to 50 grams per day. This will put your body into ketosis, killing your appetite and making your body start burning primarily fats for fuel.

Of course, low-carb diets have many other health benefits besides just weight loss. They can have life-saving effects in type 2 diabetics, for example (25Trusted Source).

Summary Studies have shown that cutting carbs is particularly effective at getting rid of the fat in the belly area, around the organs and in the liver.

Dietary fiber is mostly indigestible plant matter.

It is often claimed that eating plenty of fiber can help with weight loss.

This is true, but it's important to keep in mind that not all fiber is created equal.

It seems to be mostly the soluble and viscous fibers that have an effect on your weight (26Trusted Source).

These are fibers that bind water and form a thick gel that "sits" in the gut.

This gel can dramatically slow the movement of food through your digestive system, and slow down the digestion and absorption of nutrients. The end result is a prolonged feeling of fullness and reduced appetite (27Trusted Source).

One review study found that an additional 14 grams of fiber per day were linked to a 10% decrease in calorie intake and weight loss of 4.5 lbs (2 kg) over 4 months (28Trusted Source).

In one 5-year study, eating 10 grams of soluble fiber per day was linked to a 3.7% reduction in the amount of fat in the abdominal cavity (29Trusted Source).

What this implies, is that soluble fiber may be particularly effective at reducing the harmful belly fat.

The best way to get more fiber is to eat a lot of plant foods like vegetables and fruit. Legumes are also a good source, as well as some cereals like whole oats.

Then you could also try taking a fiber supplement like glucomannan. This is one of the most viscous dietary fibers in existence, and has been shown to cause weight loss in several studies (30Trusted Source, 31Trusted Source).

Summary There is some evidence that soluble dietary fiber can lead to reduced amounts of belly fat. This should cause major improvements in metabolic health and reduced risk of several diseases.

Exercise is important for various reasons.

It is among the best things you can do if you want to live a long, healthy life and avoid disease.

Listing all of the amazing health benefits of exercise is beyond the scope of this article, but exercise does appear to be effective at reducing belly fat.

However, keep in mind that I'm not talking about abdominal exercises here. Spot reduction (losing fat in one spot) is not possible, and doing endless amounts of ab exercises will not make you lose fat from the belly.

In one study, 6 weeks of training just the abdominal muscles had no measurable effect on waist circumference or the amount of fat in the abdominal cavity (32Trusted Source).

That being said, other types of exercise can be very effective.

Aerobic exercise (like walking, running, swimming, etc) has been shown to cause major reductions in belly fat in numerous studies (33Trusted Source, 34Trusted Source).

Another study found that exercise completely prevented people from re-gaining abdominal fat after weight loss, implying that exercise is particularly important during weight maintenance (35Trusted Source).

Exercise also leads to reduced inflammation, lower blood sugar levels and improvements in all the other metabolic abnormalities that are associated with excess abdominal fat (36Trusted Source).

Summary Exercise can be very effective if you are trying to lose belly fat. Exercise also has a number of other health benefits and can help you live a longer life.

What you eat is important. Pretty much everyone knows this.

However, most people actually don't have a clue what they are really eating.

People think they're eating "high protein," "low-carb" or something else, but tend to drastically over- or underestimate.

I think that for anyone who truly wants to optimize their diet, tracking things for a while is absolutely essential.

It doesn't mean you need to weigh and measure everything for the rest of your life, but doing it every now and then for a few days in a row can help you realize where you need to make changes.

If you want to boost your protein intake to 25–30% of calories, as recommended above, just eating more protein rich foods won't be enough. You need to actually measure and fine tune in order to reach that goal.

Check out these articles here for a calorie calculator and a list of free online tools and apps to track what you are eating.

I personally do this every few months. I weigh and measure everything I eat to see what my current diet looks like.

Then I know exactly where to make adjustments in order to get closer to my goals.

The Most Dangerous Fat Is the Easiest to Lose | Weight Loss | MyFitnessPal

The Most Dangerous Fat Is the Easiest to Lose | Weight Loss | MyFitnessPal

The Most Dangerous Fat Is the Easiest to Lose

It's every weight loss enthusiast's dream to zap belly fat but, far from pure vanity, there's actually a reason why having a lot of fat in the abdominal region can be dangerous. Fat is stored all over our body, but how does an expanding waistline grow your risk for chronic illness?

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Your body's fat impacts your health differently depending on where it's stored. While most fat found on other parts of our bodies (think arms, legs, buttocks) are considered "subcutaneous fat," belly fat is more likely to be "visceral."

PINCHABLE VERSUS PRESSABLE

"Subcutaneous fat" is the pinchable, squishy fat right between your skin and muscle that helps keep you warm, cushions you against shock, and stores extra calories. "Visceral fat" stores calories too, but isn't as pinchable because it is located in and around your organs. It's hidden deep within the belly region, which is what makes it firm (rather than squishy) when you press it.

PROXIMITY

Fat doesn't just store calories—it's a living tissue capable of producing and releasing hormones that affect your other organs. Because visceral fat sits near our organs, its release of these chemicals is poorly situated. Having more visceral fat can raise your LDL (a.k.a. "bad" cholesterol) and blood pressure. Visceral fat can also make you less sensitive to insulin, which increases your risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

TELLING BAD BELLY FAT APART

Even if you're thin, you can still have visceral fat around the abdominal region—being "skinny" doesn't necessarily mean you're healthy. There's no sure-fire way to tell visceral from subcutaneous fat short of an expensive CT scan, but it's important for you to get a rough idea of what your visceral stores are. Here are a few tricks to figure out where your belly stands:

APPLES AND PEARS

You're probably wondering, "What does fruit have to do with it?" These two fruits give a quick visual of where most of your fat is stored on the body. Pears tend to store fat in the lower extremities (hips, thighs, buttocks) as subcutaneous fat while apples tend to store fat in the upper region (belly, chest) as visceral fat. It takes a quick inspection, but this is an imperfect way to tell these two fats apart.

WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE (WC)

Feel for the top of your hip bone (it's at the same level as the top of your belly button) and circle a tape measure around this point. Remember to relax and don't suck in your gut (be honest!). Take 2-3 measurements and figure out the average. Men should have a WC of less than 40 inches (102 cm) and women should have a WC of less than 35 inches (89 cm).

WAIST-TO-HIP RATIO

The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) takes the circumference of your waist (see above) and divides it by the circumference of your hips. To measure your hips, stand in front of a mirror then figure out the widest part of your butt and measure that circumference. Then use this formula:
WHR = (Waist circumference) / (Hip circumference).
Men should have a WHR of less than 1 while women should have a WHR of less than 0.8.

KNOW YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY HISTORY

If your parents or siblings have insulin resistance, heart disease or non-alcoholic fatty liver, you may be at a greater risk for storing visceral fat. Keeping an eye on your visceral fat may be beneficial, but know that the causes of these chronic diseases are complex. If you're in doubt, it's best to speak with your healthcare provider.

BANISHING VISCERAL FAT

If you fall in the normal range for WC and WHR, that's great! Keep working at your weight goals as you see fit. If you're not there, don't despair. Because of its proximity to the liver, visceral fat is usually the easier fat to burn. It's the less risky subcutaneous fat that likes to stick around.

Unfortunately, you can't forcefully spot reduce fat around your belly no matter how many crunches you do. The next best thing is to live a healthy lifestyle:

  • Go beyond weight tracking. You can track your waist, hip and even neck circumference in the app. Use this feature to see how your measurements change over time as you lose weight.
  • Sweat for 30-60 minutes each day. Visceral fat responds well to regular endurance exercises, such as running, biking, rowing, swimming, that elevate your heart rate. As your body uses fat to fuel exercise, it'll start using up your visceral stores.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Eat a diet high in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean protein with calories set for gradual weight loss (e.g. about 1-2 pounds per week). Cut way back on added sugars and alcohol since these nutrients will more likely end up as visceral fat.
  • Sleep more, stress less. It's easier said than done, but in order to take care of your physical body, you have to take care of your mental state. Sleep loss and stress can sabotage your health and fitness goals, so learn more about getting a quality night's rest and use meditation or yoga to calm your mind. Remember, it's not just about your health; it's about your happiness, too.

3 questions about CPF withdrawals from age 55

3 questions about CPF withdrawals from age 55

05 Apr 2019
SOURCE: CPF Board

When you turn 55, a Retirement Account (RA) is created for you. Savings from your Ordinary Account (OA) and Special Account (SA) will be transferred to your RA to form your retirement sum, which will provide you with monthly payouts from your payout eligibility age*. After setting aside your retirement sum, you can withdraw your remaining OA and SA savings.

Here are three common questions that members turning 55 have about CPF withdrawals.

1. How much can I withdraw?
The amount you can withdraw from age 55 depends on how much you set aside in your RA.

If
you set aside the Full Retirement Sum (FRS)…
You can withdraw your remaining OA and SA savings.

If you want to withdraw more…
You can set aside the Basic Retirement Sum (BRS) — which is half of the FRS — with sufficient property charge/pledge. You can then withdraw the remaining amount from your RA (excluding top-up monies, government grants, and interest earned in your RA).

If you have less than the FRS or the BRS (with a property)…
You can withdraw up to $5,000 unconditionally.

Below are the retirement sums for those turning 55 in 2019:

Basic Retirement Sum$88,000
Full Retirement Sum$176,000
Enhanced Retirement Sum$264,000

Find out the retirement sum applicable to you here.

Now, let's illustrate the above with an example.

Mr Tan turns 55 in 2019 with a fully paid up property. He has $80,000 in his OA and $120,000 in his SA. This means $120,000 from his SA and $56,000 from his OA will be transferred to his RA to form his retirement sum of $176,000.

He then has two options:

Option 1: Retain the FRS of $176,000 in his RA and withdraw the remaining $24,000 from his OA.

Option 2: Set aside the BRS of $88,000 since he has a property, and withdraw $24,000 from his OA and an additional $88,000 from his RA. This means he can withdraw a total of $112,000.

2. Should I withdraw at 55?
Take your own personal financial circumstances into consideration when deciding when you should withdraw your CPF savings.

If you feel that there is no immediate need for the money, you can always choose to leave it in your CPF accounts and withdraw it later, at any time after age 55 — partially or in full, and as often as you like as long as you meet the applicable withdrawal conditions.

If you choose not to make a withdrawal, your CPF savings will continue to earn up to 6% interest per year!

While deciding if you should make a withdrawal, you may also want to consider your retirement goals. Keep in mind that withdrawing more now means that you are setting aside a lower retirement sum, which would give you lesser payouts at your payout eligibility age*. So plan accordingly to decide if you want more now or leave more for your future.

3. How do I make a withdrawal?
About 6 months before your 55th birthday, you will receive a letter from the CPF Board with information on your options. If you wish to make a withdrawal, you can either:

a. Complete the hard copy "Application for CPF Withdrawal for Members 55 and Above" form and mail it to CPF Board; or

b.  Apply through my cpf Online Servicesto receive your money via GIRO or PayNow.

For more details on how you can withdraw your CPF savings, refer here.

Still not sure? Check out the video below for a visual explanation of your withdrawal options!

*The payout eligibility age for those born in 1954 or later is 65.
